LOCKDOWNTIME #9

sharing bc i ordered the beaut new verso edition of minima moralia yday. now let’s get to the recs (abridged form again, still been busy w other stuff, soz):
this essay on the theorising the popularity of simpsons memes by tom whyman was an absolute riot to read yesterday, and not just because of all the small simpsons references dotted throughout. whyman makes the provocative and convincing point that “simpsons meme” has become an artistic form in and of itself; simpsons memes aren’t really “about” the simpsons so much as they are about something else through the simpsons. i could go on, but it’s better you just read the piece. at the very least it’s a laugh.
(it also introduced me to the “lowmer” meme, which i had never heard of, and is clearly a piece of comedic gold.)
TV REC: reader louis has written in suggesting the larry sanders show, which is available on amazon prime here. i watched bits of it many years ago, and do remember finding it very funny. if curb your enthusiasm is your jam (also a very good TV rec that you should check out!), you’ll enjoy it.
NEW MUSIC: norman records have a good list of new music out here
BOOKS linked the Urgency Reader 2 in their email today, a cool e-zine on the current crisis. in the zine’s words: “The call for work was motivated by two desires: 1—to collectively document some of the extraordinary conditions, dynamics, and emotions being experienced while in quarantine, and 2—to provide some relief to artists and writers impacted by the crisis, in both creative and monetary forms. How might publishing as artistic practice embody communal care?”
